Questions for an Unfamiliar Shore
Short, practical answers to the questions independent travellers ask most before a remote crossing.
How many buffer days should I allow on a remote island trip?
For ferry-served islands in exposed seas, allow at least one spare day before any onward flight. For islands served weekly or less, plan as if your return could slip by a full sailing. See Transport.
Do I need permission to visit some islands?
A few islands require it. Tristan da Cunha needs prior approval, Pitcairn has entry requirements, and some reserves such as Surtsey are closed to all but scientists.
What should travel insurance cover for remote islands?
Look for cover for weather delays, missed connections and medical evacuation, and check any exclusions for remote or offshore locations.
Should I book accommodation before transport?
Usually yes. On small or capped islands such as Lord Howe, beds are scarcer than seats. Confirm a bed in writing first. See Lord Howe.
Can I pay by card on small islands?
Often, but not always. Connections fail, and some shops and honesty boxes accept cash only. Carry enough cash for several days.
How do I cope with rough crossings?
Take seasickness remedies before sailing, stay midship and low, look at the horizon, and eat lightly. Ask a pharmacist which remedy suits you.
How can I avoid bringing invasive species?
Clean boots and gear of soil and seeds, check bags for stowaways, and follow any rules on food and plants. Biosecurity protects years of conservation work. See Marine Life.
How close can I get to seabirds and seals?
If an animal changes its behaviour because of you, you are too close. Stay on paths near colonies, never move seal pups, and keep dogs leashed.
Is it acceptable to photograph island residents and homes?
Ask first. Crofts, piers and graveyards are working and private places. Small communities notice when visitors treat them as scenery.
